Balloons!

It's time for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Every October hundreds of balloonists gather here, and the skies fill with color for a week. So far this week they've been thwarted by rain or wind most days, but today the sun came out and up they went.

These pics are actually from last year, taken from my house and from the park across the street. I'm too lazy to brave the crowds at Balloon Park and besides, why should I, with views like this? If they land right in front of my nose again this year, I'll add fresh pics.

It's a fun reason to come to Albuquerque, if you ever need one!

I lived in Abq for a short while back in the mid-80s. The balloon festival was so cool. It's hard to describe and pictures don't really do it justice. It's something that I recommend everyone see at least once.

origin - You oughtta come back and see it now. It's probably double the number of balloons it was back then.

skaterboy - glad you like 'em. It is a fun event.

I ended up going after all this year, getting up at the crack of a cloudy gray dawn, driving in a long line, from which we bailed to walk across fields, drinking coffee in the crowds while we waited for the weather word, and finally enjoying closeup inflations and liftoffs of about 50 balloons before the weather got too bad and the rest of them folded and ran. It was great. I went with my sister and her partner and little boy, age 6, and my son age 13. Being up close to a hot air balloon you see how tough they are, and how awkward to handle. It looks so fun, to be up there floating above everything. One day I may yet fly.
